Having Fun At The Beach
by Zeanee Sabia

Whether alone or with a family, going to the beach is fun.

It's a great day-trip even if you hate the water. Your day
at the beach will provide many memories, assuming you do a
little bit of planning.

Only your imagination limits what activities can be
enjoyed at the beach. Hundreds of activities are possible,
if the weather cooperates. Sunbathing and swimming are the
most popular things to do at the beach, but even if you
prefer to stay out of the sun and the water, you can still
enjoy yourself.

It's not hard to find things for your kids to do at the
beach. Young children and toddlers enjoy the leisurely
pace of a picnic, or playing with a shovel and pail to
build sandcastles (or whatever they want!). Pre-teens
enjoy tossing a Frisbee and looking for pretty shells and
rocks. Older kids will enjoy the chance to splash around
in the surf, and maybe even play volleyball in the water.
Kids can also play with a beach ball, or read. in the
surf. These activities can be replicated every time you go
to the beach, and the materials needed to do them are
hardly expensive.

Ideally, you'll assemble all of the necessities for your
trip to the beach the day beforehand. This will reduce
your stress on the day of the trip, and make it less
likely that you'll forget something. If you want to be
able to select the ideal patch of sand to spend the day
on, get to the beach early. One critical consideration to
keep mind: if you have young children, you'll want to be
in close proximity to a bathroom. And sometimes all the
sun at the beach can get to be too much, so try to find a
spot near some natural shade.

When you go the beach, you will need to carry a few
important items with you to ensure a safety and comfort.
The following items are necessary for any trip to the
beach:

* Sunscreen: It stops sunburns before they start.
Reapplying throughout the day is important, so bring lots
of sunscreen. The newer spray pump sunscreen applicators
are best.

* Blanket and/or beach chairs: It adds comfort to your
trip to sit in a chair instead of on the sand.

* Umbrella: If you won't be in an area with any natural
shade, having an umbrella is a must.

* Plenty of water: Be sure that everyone is drinking
plenty of water. Dehydration is a common problem at the
beach and can be dangerous.

* Food and snacks: Everyone's happier when their stomach
is full.

* Toys and games- Kids bore easily, so bring plenty of
different activities to occupy them.

All this planning is less important if you live close to
the beach, but not all of us are so lucky. If you live far
away, careful planning is critical. Your family will have
the most fun if they have less to worry about.
